Factoids

Tsutomu Yamaguchi was on a business trip to Hiroshima when the first atomic bomb was dropped. He spent 3 days in the hospital suffering from temporary blindness and deafness, and serious burns. After three days the trains were running again so he returned to his home in Nagasaki - just in time for that city to be leveled by the second atomic bomb. He was the only person officially recognized by the Japanese government as having survived both atomic bombs, although he claimed to have met at least a hundred people with similar experiences. He died in Jan. 2010 at the age of 93.

Mosquitoes are the deadliest disease vector in history. Over half the people who have ever lived on Earth have been killed by mosquito borne diseases.

Like many birds, robins use magnetic fields to navigate, and become confused when exposed to artificial magnetic fields. They appear to "see" magnetic fields specifically with their right eyes. A Robin can navigate properly with its left eye covered, but loses its ability to navigate when its right eye is covered. Pidgins can still sense magnetic fields with both eyes covered.
