To the Editor:
World must show mercy To all human beings.
The Church has been corrupted like ancient Israel for centuries. World War I, when one so-called Christian national savaged another, each in the name of the same loving Jesus, was almost a hallucination.
The religion wars, the Inquisition, the Crusades, the fire-bombings of Dresden and Tokyo, the first atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, were in fact the crucifixion of the good Lord. We continue to crucify him by greed, adultery, war and abortion. (There probably never was any such thing as a "just" war, certainly not when civilians are killed or maimed.)
I am a sinner. But the above seems clear to me. After reading the New Testament, where can you say my faith and reasoning are defective? Vatican II was a small step in the correct direction. But we need more substantial reforms in our minds and hearts. We manage to justify anything we do, and never feel the pangs of conscience. Someday we will feel the flames of hell.
"Heaven and Earth will pass away, but my Word will never pass away," says Jesus. Our hope is His mercy and forgiveness, when we turn from our sins. Whatever happened to "sin"? It seems like a strange word. Nowadays we will receive mercy if we show mercy - to all human beings, not just our own kind.
