I completely enjoyed Steve Mason's piece in POC last, "Jesus Who?" - the biting humor was icing on the cake! And I would like to add a subtitle to his piece, to wit, "The Apotheosis of Ignore-ance." Here I break down the word "ignorance" to emphasize the word "ignore" because the believers Steve Mason refers to deliberately ignore obvious facts.
Their ignore-ance simply allow them to feel good w/o which they would not feel good. What's that old saw about the man who gets a pebble stuck in his shoe and begins to limp? The intelligent person will remove the pebble, but the not-so-sharp buy a crutch because they are ignore-ant of the cause of their limp.
